Teacher's Assistant Certificate - Inclusion of Indigenous Cultural Competencies

Maple Ridge and Lower Mainland

AWARE Society is partnering with Discovery Community College to offer a 24-week Project Based Labour Market Training Program that will prepare you for a career as a Teacher’s Assistant. The program includes Indigenous components that will provide you with the knowledge and competencies to increase the presence of Indigenous culture, languages and history for inclusion in your teaching practices and support to students.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Must be an unemployed or underemployed B.C. resident legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Must have established a regular EI claim or parental claim in the past 10 years OR be in receipt of BCEA or PWD benefits
  • Must be referred by a WorkBC Employment Service Centre Case Manager
  • Undergo a Criminal Record Check prior to program start date

Program Includes:

  • 19 weeks of Classroom theory
  • 3-week practicum
  • First Aid and Food Safe certification
  • Indigenous focused cultural competency components
  • Employability and job search skills support
  • The program will be 100% funded by the Ministry of Social Development and Poverty Reduction for eligible candidates

Program Start Dates:

  • Cohort 1 – August 16, 2021
  • Cohort 2 – January 17, 2022
